The Braves put a total team effort into beating the Marlins, 7-4. Chipper Jones was 3 for 3 with a home run on his 36th birthday, raising his league-leading average to .442. Chuck James pitched 5 innings for the win, the bullpen pitched 4 scoreless innings to preserve the victory. Each batter in the starting lineup had at least one hit. A good effort all around to bring the club to even on the season with an 11-11 record. The Braves travel to New York to play the Mets this weekend.
Brownsburg beat Mooresville last night, 5-0. Matt Duncan threw a complete game no-hitter and had 10 strikeouts. Jake Houston led the offense with 2 hits, including a double, and an RBI. The Dogs are now 11-1 on the season. They face a tough stretch of baseball this weekend. The Dogs play Westfield on Friday night and Saturday afternoon, then play #6 Cathedral at Victory Field on Saturday night. Westfield is only one game behind Brownsburg in the Conference, so those two games are important for the conference standings. Cathedral should be a good test to see if Brownsburg is an elite team in Class 4A.
There was a report in the Indy Star this morning that a group of high school administrators are researching a proposal to reduce the number of classes from four to three in the sports that currently have four classes. The top 2 classes would have 128 schools. Those schools would compete in 4-team sectionals, regionals, and semi-states, with a single state championship game per class. The reasons for this are to cut down on the daily tournament travel costs and to also make the tournament more localized. Of course, I think they should remove class sports and go back to the traditional format that worked for 90 years. But, any proposal that cuts the number of classes sounds good to me. Maybe 10 years from now, we can cut the number of classes to two. Then 10 years from that point, go back to the way it was when people actually cared about who was in the later rounds of the tournament.
