Brownsburg boys basketball team has a chance to get an elusive victory tonight

The Brownsburg boys basketball team (3-10) travels to McCutcheon (4-6) tonight in a game that could decide who finishes in the cellar of the HCC. Brownsburg has won 1 of thir last 9 games and that game was won on a shot with 6 seconds left over Plainfield. McCutcheon has won 4 games, but they were all against smaller schools. They are 0-5 against 4A schools and have a 4-1 record over the small schools. The Sagarin ratings say the game is a tossup.

Brownsburg girls basketball team has successful senior night

The Brownsburg girls basketball team hosted Zionsville last night for senior night. The Dogs started the game quickly and led 26-14 after one quarter. However, Zionsville had a run of their own and cut the lead to 28-22 with 5 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. But, it was all Brownsburg from that point on. A 24-0 run over the next 9 minutes of play gave the Dogs a 52-22 cushion and led to a 78-40 victory. The seniors played really well as Leah Freestone scored 11 points, Lauren Fiscus also scored 11 and Haley Wittig got 2 points. Freshman Stepahnie Manvunga led the team with 14 points and Junior Lindsey Dall had 12 points, her 3rd double-digit output in the last 4 games. The victory on Wednesday leads to a huge conference game on Saturday afternoon against Westfield. Brownsburg, Westfield, and Lafayette Jeff are all 6-1 in the conference. Fishers is 5-2 and still has a shot at the title. Jeff plays Hamilton SE on Saturday afternoon. Fishers does not have a conference game this weekend.

More Ball State football news, as the IU Hoosiers have released their football schedule through 2012. Ball State will host (yes, you read that correctly) the Hoosiers on September 3, 2011 The Cardinals will travel to Bloomington to play IU on September 15, 2012.

In Ball State basketball news, women's guard Audrey McDonald set the MAC record for 3-pointers on Wednesday night as she hit 3 treys in a loss at EMU to bring her career total to 281. The women's team is 9-9 overall and 3-2 in the MAC. On the men's side, the Cardinals beat Western Michigan 75-68 to even their record at 8-8 overall and 2-2 in the MAC. BSU led by 21 at one point in the game and never trailed.

Brownsburg, Braves, and Ball State

The Brownsburg girls basketball team hosts Zionsville tonight. Bburg has a 13-4 record and Zville is 5-10. According to the Sagarin ratings, Brownsburg is a 28 point favorite.

The Braves signed Peter Moylan to a 1-year contract for just over $1 million. He pitched in a lot of games over the past three years, with 80 in 2007 and 87 in 2009. His career ERA is 2.45, so it was good to keep him around to solidify what looks to be a strong bullpen for Atlanta this year.

Good news from Muncie, as Ball State running back MiQuale Lewis has been granted another year of eligibility to play football for the Cardinals. Lewis was hurt during his freshman and sophomore seasons. There has been no official word yet, but a tweet from Lewis and information from two other sources have stated that an announcement will be made in a few weeks. That is good news and bad news for BSU. It's good that we have three good running backs returning. The bad news is that Eric Williams may transfer from BSU due to playing time issues. Williams was our best option during some games this year and it would be a huge loss if he were to leave the program.

Brownsburg girls basketball team keeps rollin' on

The Lady Bulldogs disposed of Avon last night, 61-44. Lindsey Dall continued her streak of great play, leading the team with 17 points. Ryne Carr scored 12, Stephanie Mavunga 10, and Allison DeVaney 7. DeVaney's 7 points were a season-high, and I believe a career-high for her. She hasn't been getting a lot of varsity playing time lately, but she made her minutes count on Monday night. The Dogs led 16-7 after one quarter and had the lead up to 20 points in the 3rd quarter. Avon cut the lead back to 10 points in the middle of the 4th quarter, but their leading scorer (Haley Austin, 19 points) fouled out with 3 minutes to go, ending the charge. BBurg is now 5-1 in the HCC and 13-4 overall. They host Zionsville on Wednesday night.

Huge week for Brownsburg's girls basketball team

The Brownsburg girls basketball team faces three HCC opponents this week starting with a trip to Avon tonight. Brownsburg is 12-4 overall and 4-1 in the HCC while Avon is 6-9, 1-5 in HCC. On Wednesday, the Dogs host Zionsville who are 5-10 overall and 0-6 in the HCC. The big test is on Saturday when Brownsburg hosts Westfield. If the Dogs win on Monday and Wednesday, they would be 6-1 in the HCC, the same record as conference leaders Westfield and Lafayette Jeff. Jeff plays Hamilton SE on Saturday afternoon. Fishers is 5-2 in the conference, but does not have a conference game this week. At the end of the day Saturday, we will know a lot more about the race for the HCC title.

Brownsburg basketball falls to new low

The Brownsburg boys basketball team played a good half of basketball in each of their two games this weekend, however they could not put a good second half together and lost to both Hamilton SE and Manual.

On Friday night, the Dogs were tied at the half and were down only 7 at the end of three quarters, but struggled down the stretch in a 60-46 defeat. Senior Jacob Eldridge led the team with 16 points. Sophomore Tyler Whetstone added 12 and Junior Torrey Nibbs scored 10.

On Saturday afternoon, BBurg hosted Manual, a team that was 2-7 coming into the game. Once again, the Bulldogs kept it close at the half, only down one point and that was due to a three-pointer by Manual at the buzzer. Just like Friday, a slow start to the second half did Brownsburg in, leading to a 55-46 defeat. Senior Kurtis Runyon scored 19 points for the Bulldogs while Tyler Whetstone added 7.

I was impressed with one player on each team this weekend. Hamilton SE sophomore guard Gary Harris starts on a team that has 7 seniors, which tells you how good he is. He has offers from Xavier and IUPUI already and is being recruited by the likes of Cincinnati, Illinois, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Syracuse, and West Virginia. He scored 14 points against Brownsburg on Friday night and leads the team in scoring (16 ppg), rebounding (5 rpg), and steals (3 spg). On Saturday afternoon Manual guard and Butler commit Chrishawn Hopkins stole the show with an alley-oop dunk to start the game, followed by a sweet three-pointer to get the Redskins off to a good start. He finished the game with 31 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 blocks. He is averaging 23 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 3 blocks per game this year. He has accomplished this while being double-teamed all year. Butler could use him as he has great quickness, yet is very smooth and has a good shooting touch. It will be interesting to see him play somewhat close to home next year.

You may ask, how has Brownsburg fallen to a new low this year? The Dogs are 3-10, which is by far their worst start since the early 90's and that is only because I can't find any records that go back farther than that. The previous bad start was the 1996 team that started 5-8 and finished 8-13. That team's schedule was a little weak at the end of the season, including games with 2A schools Tri-West and North Montgomery. This season's remaining schedule includes Noblesville, Lafayette Jeff, and North Central, all of which we are projected to lose by 20 points or more. The senior class accounts for 63% of the points on this team. That can be either good or bad. Maybe the team does not have the right chemistry, or maybe they do have the right pieces of the puzzle and are going to be even worse next year. Either way, I will still be in the bleachers watching. GO DOGS!!!
