The Atlanta Braves shutout the Marlins last night 8-0. John Smoltz pitched 5 innings and four pitchers from the bullpen threw one inning each to combine for the shutout. Chipper Jones was 4-4 with 2 homers to extend his league-leading batting average to .443. They host the Dodgers on Friday to start a three-game series.
Ball State closer Kyle Heyne has been named on the watch list for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year award. He is the only MAC pitcher to be named to the list. Heyne became Ball State's all-time save leader earlier this year. He has 31 career saves.
The Brownsburg Bulldogs beat Terre Haute North last night, 21-9. Mitch Jankowski got his second win of they year on the mound. Joel Stucker and Zach Harrison each hit their first home runs of the season. The Bulldogs are now 8-1. They have a tough schedule next week. They play Hamilton SE and Westfield for two games each and they play Cathedral at Victory Field on Saturday April 26th.

Road woes and another one-run game
The Braves lost another one run game last night, 6-5. They are now 0-7 in one-run games and 2-7 on the road. Tim Hudson only threw three innings as he is recovering from the flu and could only throw 85 mph when he usually throws in the mid to low 90s. John Smoltz takes the hill tonight in the series finale at 710pm.
The BSU Cardinals beat Indiana yesterday 5-2. Defense and pitching saved the day. The defense turned 5 double plays and had no errors. The pitchers held IU scoreless over the final 7 innings. Dean Anna had a homer, giving him 4 in the last two games and a team-leading 9 on the season. The Cards are now 21-11 (19-11 in D1 games). They play a 3-game series at Central Michigan this weekend.
The Brownsburg Bulldogs suffered their first defeat of the year last night, losing to Noblesville 7-4. Senior Mark Conover took the loss, he is now 2-1 on the season. Junior Tucker Barnhart had 2 hits for the Bulldogs. The team has a 7-1 record and is 3-1 in the conference. While the loss does sting a little, the HCC is a tough baseball conference (7 state championship appearances in the last 14 years). The conference winner was 14-4 last year, so a few losses shouldn't hurt too much.

Walk this way....
The Braves lost to the Marlins 4-0 last night. Braves starter Jair Jurrjens gave up two runs in six innings for his first quality start of the season. He has been pitching well, but the offense hasn't helped him in his two losses, scoring 3 total runs in those two games. The bullpen did not pitch well last night, walking in two runs in the 8th inning to halt any chance of a Braves comeback. Once Pete Moylan and Rafael Soriano are back from the DL, the bullpen should be a little more solid. The offense showed little life, but Chipper Jones was 2-4, raising his league-leading batting average to .415. Staff ace Tim Hudson pitches tonight for the Braves as they play the Marlins at 710pm.
The Ball State Cardinals baseball team beat Indiana State 14-13 in 10 innings. The Cards had 5 homers, including a walk-off winner by Ryan Chenoweth. Dean Anna had 3 homers and 6 RBI to lead the team. BSU is now 20-11 on the season. They play at Indiana on Wednesday at 3pm.
The Brownsburg Bulldogs beat Noblesville last night 17-6. Jake Houston had 2 homers and Alex Berlyn got his second win of the season on the mound. The Bulldogs are 7-0 on the season and 3-0 in the conference. They go to Noblesville tonight to complete the home/home series.

No baseball.....how about some money talk?
All of the teams that I follow had off days yesterday, so there isn't any baseball news to report.
I figure that I would talk about my investments today. I have my 401k account which I have been putting money into since I started working (10 years so far). There is a company match, so while I have put 6% of my salary in my 401k, the company has matched that by adding another 5%. Right now, the fund is mostly in stock, while being split evenly between domestic and international companies. Barring an extreme market turn, I should be well-situated when I can get to that money in another 23 1/2 years.
My non-401k investment account is basically my savings account. Currently, I have my money split between 8 ETF's (Exchange Traded Funds). My account has both domestic and international funds for large cap companies, small cap companies, REITs (Real Estate Investment Trust), and bond funds. The yearly dividend yield for these average 2.5%, which isn't too bad. If I need money in an emergency, I can take the money from this account.
I also have my company's employee stock purchase plan. The company adds 15% to the dollar amount I put in each quarter. I use this money as a quarterly "bonus" to myself and also as a short term savings account.
I also have a checking account, but since it does not pay interest I try to keep the balance as low as I can without incurring any fees. Other than the 401k account, the other money is fairly accessible within 2-3 days.
At this point, I feel that I am financially stable and that my retirement should be well funded. Even with at least two more recessions/depressions before I retire, the money should be more than enough to get me to the golden years.
See you tomorrow!

So-so Weekend
The Braves split the weekend games with Washington, winning 10-2 on Saturday and losing 5-4 on Sunday. Sunday's loss was especially painful because Tom Glavine got hurt in the first inning with a pulled hamstring and is listed as day-to-day (as we all are).
Ball State split their weekend games with Bowling Green. They lost on Saturday 18-16 and won on Sunday 9-7. Kolbrin Vitek got the win on Sunday to improve his record to 5-0. Vitek has pitched well this year, his ERA is 4.32 and he has 48 strikeouts in 41 2/3 innings. He is also batting .329, so he is a pretty good dual threat for the Cards. The Cards are now 19-11 overall and 7-2 in the MAC.
The Brownsburg High School baseball team beat Lebanon 19-4 on a cold, rainy, snowy Saturday. Mitch Jankowski got his first win of the season on the mound and Matt Steinbaker homered, his first of the year. They have three games this week, two against pre-season #1 Noblesville and one game against Terre Haute North. The Dogs are now 6-0 on the season.
