192 teams eliminated this weekend, also many Redskins cut as the team goes in a younger direction

The sectional semi-finals of the boys basketball tourney is tonight. There are some decent matchups in class 4A. North Central faces Warren Central, Warsaw/Concord, Valpo/LaPorte, HSE/Noblesville are just a few of the 15+ win teams that face each other tonight.

The Washington Redskins cut a bunch of players last night, including many starters. Antwann RandleEl, Ladell Betts, Fred Smoot, Cornelius Griffin, Rock Cartwright, Randy Thomas, and Todd Collins were the notable cuts. Chris Samuels announced his retirement. Cartwright, RandleEl, Betts, Griffin, and Smoot each played significant roles last year. Thomas and Samuels have been stalwarts on the offensive line for many years. New coach, new team, new GM....maybe this year will be better than a 4-12 record!

Brownsburg's season mercifully comes to an end, more tourney upsets, and the beginning of the MLB season (sort of)

The Brownsburg boys basketball team finished their season last night with a 59-48 loss to Manual in sectional play. The Dogs hung tough for a while as they were down only 1 point going into the fourth quarter, but Butler recruit Chrishawn Hopkins led a fourth quarter charge that put the game away. Hopkins scored 32 for Manual which was similar to the 31 points that he scored against Brownsburg in the regular season Redskin victory. Bburg was led by Micha Whetstone's 16 points and 4 three-pointers. He was the only player in double figures for the Dogs. Brownsburg finishes the season with a record of 5-16.

There were some big upsets in the 4A tourney last night. Southport, a team that had once lost 13 straight games and carried a 4-15 record, beat 4A #5 Center Grove 72-69. At Carmel, 4A #8 Zionsville was defeated by Noblesville 47-42.

Spring training games began yesterday as the Braves lost to the Mets 4-2. Tommy Hanson pitched two scoreless while striking out three. Phenom Jason Heyward singled, walked twice, and stole a base to show that he is a force to be reckoned with.

In football, the MAC has released its conference schedule and Ball State has one game on the ESPN family of networks next season. The game is on Friday November 12th at Buffalo on ESPNU. The Cardinals are one of three MAC schools that are only on ESPN once. Of course, after a 2-10 season, there isn't much reason to put them on TV. BSU starts out at home against SE Missouri State and Liberty, then faces a brutal stretch of road games at Purdue, Iowa, and Central Michigan. All home games are on Saturday with the exception of the usual Thursday opening night game.

Ball State's bullpen ruins the day

The Ball State baseball team led 4-1 after 5 innings behind a strong pitching performance from do-it-all star Kolbrin Vitek, but the bullpen could not hold the lead and the Cardinals fell to UAB 6-5. Vitek pitched 5 innings, giving up one earned run, however, the bullpen gave up 4 earned runs with 4 hits and 8 walks in 3 innings of work. Vitek tried to bring the Cardinals back on offense by hitting a home run in the top of the ninth to bring BSU to within one, but no one else could produce any offense in the ultimate inning. Ball State drops to 2-5 on the season. The team travels to Coastal Carolina for a two-week long invitational where they will play 9 games in 10 days starting on Friday. Ball State's opponents in the invitational include #19 Coastal Carolina (7-1), which BSU plays twice, Pittsburgh (5-1), College of Charleston (6-1), and Lipscomb (6-0).

Blowouts in semi-state action and a dissappointing day for Ball State baseball and basketball

My predictions in yesterday's post were correct as Austin beat Winchester in the 2A game and Ben Davis beat Floyd Central in the 4A game. However, what was surprising is the margin of both games. I figured the 2A game would be close, and it was for a while. Austin led 31-29 at the half. However, the second half was all Austin as they ran away with a 72-48 victory. In the 4A game, I knew Floyd Central didn't have a chance against Ben Davis, but a 41-11 halftime score was unexpected, as was the 65-28 final score. Floyd Central is ranked 23rd in the nation, and while Ben Davis is ranked 2nd, I expected a better game from Floyd Central. Ben Davis may just be that much better than the rest of the teams in the state. The state finals games are at Fort Wayne next Saturday.

The Ball State baseball team suffered two losses to UAB in games that were pretty close. In the first game, BSU was down 2-0 in the 7th when an error by Brownsburg's own TJ Baumet opened the gates for 3 unearned runs in the inning. UAB added another run in the 8th for the 6-0 final. The Cardinals amassed only 3 hits in the game. The pitching was decent as Cal Bowling (4-2/3 IP) and Morgan Coombs (3-1/3 IP) only gave up 3 earned runs in 8 innings of work. In game two, the seventh inning was the killer again. BSU led 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh when UAB put up a 5 run inning to make the game 7-5 Blazers lead. However, BSU scored 3 in the 8th to take a 8-7 lead and added another run in the 9th to lead 9-7 going into UAB's final at-bat. The Blazer scored two in the bottom of the ninth and then scored an unearned run in the 12th on another error by Baumet to win the game 10-9 in 12 innings. Kolbrin Vitek hit his second home run of the season to highlight the Cardinals offense. The Cardinal pitchers could not find the plate as they walked 8 batters and hit two more while allowing 8 hits. The final game of the series is today at 2pm.

The Ball State basketball team was in control of its own destiny as it went to Toledo to face a struggling 3-26 Rockets squad. A cold shooting first half for the Cardinals (3-for-19) dug them into a 30-15 halftime hold that they could not get out of. The closest they got was the 45-42 final score. For the game the Cards shot 25 percent from the field. The loss drops BSU into a three-way tie in the MAC West with Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan. BSU travels to Western Michigan on Thursday to conclude the regular season.
