Brownsburg's girls basketball team continued their march towards a possible HCC title by defeating a 16-1 Westfield team 54-35. The game was close at the half as BBurg held a 25-18 lead, but a strong 14-4 third quarter by the Bulldogs put the game away. BBurg was quicker in the post, led by Stephanie Mavunga's 21 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 blocked shots. Forwards Lindsey Dall (12 points, 6-10 FG) and Leah Freestone (7 rebs) also contributed to the domination in the paint. Morgan Miller and Alaura McKemie controlled the game from the guard position and eventually wore down Westfield's perimeter defense. McKemie hit her only shot of the game, which was a three pointer. Miller had 3 assists and 3 rebounds. The depth of the Bulldogs also helped and they went 9 deep, while Westfield only played 7 players. Brownsburg is tied with Lafayette Jeff at 7-1 in the conference with 1 game remaining. Brownsburg travels to Fishers on Saturday night while Jeff hosts Noblesville that same night.
The boys team had a chance to win at McCutcheon on Friday night, but could not close the deal as they lost 46-44. The Dogs were ahead 33-25 with a minute left in the third quarter and led 37-26 early in the fourth quarter. However, the Mavericks closed the game with a 20-7 run, including two free throws with 5 seconds remaining to clinch the victory. Kurtis Runyon led the Dogs with 14 points. Jacob Eldridge and Tyler Whetstone contributed 8 points each. Torrey Nibbs did not play. Brownsburg is now 3-11. They travel to Noblesville on Friday night to face a 9-2 Millers squad.
