The Brownsburg girls basketball team took a 20-9 lead over Center Grove after the first quarter on Tuesday night. The Trojans had a 5-0 run to start the second quarter to cut the lead to 6 points, but it never got closer than that as the Bulldogs ran away to a 68-48 win.
Brownsburg's Stephanie Mavunga led all players with 23 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots. Erica Lesch scored 14 points, including four three-point baskets. Ryne Carr scored 11 and Morgan Miller dished out 7 assists. Center Grove's Melody Doss was a one-woman wrecking crew with 22 points and 3 blocked shots. Lauren Weidman chipped in with 10 points.
Both teams shot the ball pretty well. Brownsburg was 27-54 (50%), Center Grove shot 19-41 (46%). There was a disparity in foul shots as many calls did not go right for CG. The Dogs shot 13 free throws to the Trojan's 5. Fouls were skewed also, BBurg had 6 while CG was called for 14 fouls. The frustration boiled over late in the game as Center Grove's coach got a technical foul arguing a call on a clean block that was called a foul. The ref gave him two chances to settle down, but the frustration was too much.
Even though the fouls were not even, Brownsburg was clearly the better team. The Dogs out-rebounded CG 25-14, including 9-5 on the offensive glass. Center Grove turned the ball over 22 times to BBurg's 13.
The Dogs are now 6-2 and host 0-8 Harrison on Saturday. The Harrison team has fallen on hard times as their record over the last 4+ years is 8-88. According to the Sagarin ratings, Brownsburg is a 37-point favorite.
