The Brownsburg girls basketball team struggled early against Lebanon, missing their first 6 shots en route to a 9-2 deficit early in the first quarter. Lebanon led 19-10 at the end of the quarter and stretched the lead to 25-10 in the middle of the second quarter. A 3-pointer at the buzzer gave Lebanon a 31-14 lead at the half. Brownsburg shot 6 of 20 in the half and had 14 turnovers. It may have been the worst half I have seen them play all year.
A different team came out of the locker room in the second half. This team shot the ball much better and played great defense, outscoring Lebanon 20-9 in the third quarter to take a 40-34 deficit into the final stanza. A 7-0 run gave Brownsburg their first lead at the 5:10 mark of the 4th quarter. Lebanon hit two free throws to take a 45-42 lead with 2 minutes left. A basket by Brownsburg's Stephanie Mavunga, a turnover by Lebanon, and a basket by BBurg's Erica Lesch gave the Dogs a 46-45 lead with a minute left. Lebanon hit a basket with 23 seconds left to lead 47-46. On the ensuing possession, Brownsburg missed two shots then knocked the ball out of bounds with 4.9 seconds left. Lebanon tried a full-court pass, but could not corrall the ball and gave Brownsburg one last chance with 3.4 seconds to go. Ryne Carr threw the ball to Erica Lesch, who drove around the lone defender and put the ball in the hoop as time expired for a 48-47 win
The victory gives Brownsburg a 16-5 record this season after a 4-17 record a year ago. The Bulldogs shot 45 percent from the field in this game (19-42), and shot 59 percent in the second half (13-22). Lebanon shot 4 of 18 in the second half after a 10 of 17 start to the game. It was an ugly game as BBurg had 24 turnovers and Lebanon had 21. The Bulldogs had three players in double figures as Erica Lesch scored 14 points, while Stephanie Mavunga had 11 and Lindsey Dall scored 10. The Bulldogs start sectional play against Avon at Manual on Tuesday, February 9th. It is the only game of the evening and will start at 7pm.
Yesterday was signing day for college football and Ball State did not get a great class overall, but may have a few stars after all is said and done. The 2010 BSU recruiting class ranks 9th in the MAC and 108th overall. The class includes 4 three-star recruits that include two defensive backs, a defensive end, and a quarterback. The season starts on Thursday, September 2nd when the Cardinals host Southeast Missouri State.
