Sectionals are over, regionals are tomorrow, but today is an even bigger day because it is opening day for college baseball

The girls basketball sectionals were finally completed last night, so now it is on to the regionals on Saturday. In the 4A regionals, there are some competitive matchups and a few not-so-competitive games. At Valpo, Merrilville, South Bend Clay, and Elkhart Memorial all have a chance to advance to the semi-state. At Huntington, all four teams have a shot at the title. At BNL, Floyd Central, Mooresville, and Bloomington South have their sites set on the semi-state. Defending state champion Ben Davis is at Southport for the regional. They start off against Franklin Central, at team they easily defeated during the regular season. The first game at Southport is between Westfield and Warren Central. That is a game that Warren should win as long as they can keep their focus due to the methodical slow-down offense of Westfield.

My picks for the regionals:

4A - Merillville, McCutheon, Ben Davis, Mooresville
3A - Hammond Gavit, FW Elmhurst, Rushville, Ev Memorial
2A - Garrett, Oak Hill, Heritage Christian, Austin
1A - FW Canterbury, Turkey Run, Waldron, Vincennes Rivet

But the big story of the day is the opening games of the college baseball season. Ball State goes on the road to face 2009 CWS Final Four and current #15 Arkansas for a three game series. Today's game is at 405p. Brad Piatt gets the start for the Cardinals. The weather is supposed to be in the mid-40s for the weekend, but it will be rainy. Other early battles between ranked teams include #3 Virgina traveling to #16 East Carolina and #5 Rice going to #30 Stanford.
